Billed as a “Canadian Golden Pilsner”, Mythology by Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery in Barrie, Ontario is a deep, golden honey colour with a slight chill haze and pours with a fluffy, spongy white head that settles into a rocky cap and leaves a cascade of lace as you drink your glass. My tasting notes said that Mythology smells like “Noble hops out the Wazoo” and I think that description is apt. Floral tones, lemony citrus and an earthy pepper note pop from the glass, set against a base of steely, fresh cut grains and light aromas of honey and caramel.
These Noble hop qualities are also showcased in the taste of Mythology. It’s flowery and slightly soapy with a very crisp and tart citrus pith tone up front. Pilsner malt brings a light, yet somewhat earthy caramel base that’s just sturdy enough to hold a bitterness that checks in at 24 IBU. I found the finish dry and almost clove-like, with a pronounced lemon tone and earthy mineral notes beyond that. Mythology is a fairly light-bodied and well-carbonated lager, though it does have a pleasant bit of slickness on the tongue as well.
Detour from Muskoka Brewery in Bracebridge, Ontario is a light, orange-tinted golden colour and pours with a soapy white head that has good retention, hanging around as a tight collar and film throughout your glass while leaving an ample amount of lace behind. This American pale ale has strong tropical fruit aromas of mango, pineapple and passion fruit over a fairly light base of caramel and toasted grain with subtle notes of lemon, pine and gypsum.
The taste of Detour is most definitely hop forward. Bitter citrus bites at the first sip, but is backed up by a surprisingly hearty and earthy grain flavour that remains throughout the finish. Along the way I found notes of caramel, red cherry, peach and green grape before a pithy aftertaste took over the back of my tongue. The ale is medium bodied and suitably carbonated, leading to a lively feeling on the tongue before its mild oiliness eases the beer down.
Wishart’s ESB from Clocktower Brew Pub in Ottawa, Ontario is a deep, rusty amber colour with streaks of gold throughout. A frothy, light tan head settles as a climbing collar and thin film while leaving small spots of lace on your glass. Chocolate and toffee malts anchor the smell of this English ale, with notes of plum, roasted grain and lemon pith rounding it out.
The taste of Wishart’s ESB brings forth fruity esters that remind me of plum, black cherry and lemon, as well as a flavour not unlike black tea. This full-bodied and lightly carbonated ale carries a moderate, yet sharp and mineral-like bitterness. Chocolate and coffee notes in the finish lead to a dry aftertaste with hints of pepper and grapefruit.
This American Amber Ale from Hockley Valley Brewing Company in Orangeville, Ontario pours a clear amber colour with a foamy white head that leaves very little lacing and settles as a healthy collar. Hockley Amber smells of mineral water, caramel and toasted grains with an earthy backing and a smooth, plum or raisin-like note.
Hockley Amber has a fairly heavy, slightly sweet and bread-like toasted malt flavour with hints of chocolate and plum, along with a well-balanced bitterness. The ale is full-bodied with medium carbonation and has a subtle, yeast-like tingle and pop on the tongue. The finish is dry, with caramel, earth and toasted grain notes in the aftertaste.
