The latest flavoured light lager from Anheuser-Busch InBev is light golden yellow in colour and yields a creamy white head that is retained as a persistent cap. Bud Light Apple smells like candy and the kind of grocery store apple juice that people don’t let their kids drink. While this may appeal to some, there is also a thoroughly unpleasant chemical odour that reminds me of artificial sweeteners.
I find Bud Light Apple cloyingly sweet. Its malic acid-assisted green apple candy flavour is countered by a sharp citric acid tartness. There is a very light note of caramel malt in there, but the finish is dirty and overly dry tasting and I just can’t shake the chemical notes. This beer is thin bodied and has ample carbonation, which makes its general stickiness feel heightened.
Old Vienna from Molson Coors Canada is a light golden straw colour with a medium-sized and frothy white head that quickly settles as a thin film and collar, leaving small vertical streaks of lace on the glass. This American adjunct lager primarily smells of corn, along with aromas of grape, grasses and grains and a light floral note.
The taste of Old Vienna is fairly crisp, but on the sweet side with a distinct corny flavour accented by mild grain and berry notes. This lager is thin-bodied with ample and fine carbonation. There isn’t much life to it, only very mild syrup and grain sensations on the tongue. The finish is quite dry and there is a hint of alcohol flavour in the finish.
Mike’s Authentic Shandy from Mike’s Hard Lemonade Company in Chicago, Illinois pours a cloudy pale yellow colour that unsurprisingly looks like diluted lemon juice, with a loose white head that gets retained as a thin cap and leaves sparse lacing. This lemonade and lager mix has a fairly mild, yet overly sweet and syrupy lemon smell. The only hints of lager come from a dirty metallic note and distinct whiff of corn.
The taste of Mike’s Authentic Shandy is also quite sweet and dominated by what I can best describe as a concentrated, “hypernatural” lemon flavour. This shandy is medium-bodied with lots of fine carbonation, but is extremely syrupy on the tongue and teeth. Some tartness is perceived in the finish, but is swallowed by the sweetness provided by a seemingly unhealthy amount of glucose-fructose that lingers throughout the aftertaste and gets joined by a biting, metallic and chemical-like flavour.
Rickard’s Shandy from Molson Coors Canada pours a pale, cloudy straw colour with a loose white head that burns off quickly, leaves no lace and has minimal retention. This hybrid of lemonade and lager smells like freshly sliced lemon, lime juice and has a very light, grainy malt tone.
The taste of Rickard’s Shandy strikes a fine balance between tart lemon and sweet toasted malt flavours. There are notes of earth and lime as well. This beer has a very thin body and moderate carbonation. The mouthfeel has a syrupy quality, but the finish is tart and leaves my mouth feeling dry, with a mild and somewhat dirty lemon rind flavour in the aftertaste.
Molson Canadian Wheat from Molson Coors Canada is a hazy pencil yellow colour with golden tinges and a large, frothy white head that leaves hefty amounts of lace and settles as a thick cap. This wheat-infused American adjunct lager smells of sweet grain malts, corn, burnt wheat, green grape and has very slight orange peel, floral and clove notes.
The taste of Molson Canadian Wheat is rather sweet and malt heavy. Burnt wheat, corn, earth, orange rind flavours lead to a dirty tasting finish with floral and metallic notes that poke through in the aftertaste. This beer is thin bodied and somewhat watery with a mild carbonation. There isn’t much life on the tongue, but what’s there is mainly syrupy and grainy.
