Honey Ginger Shandy from Old Tomorrow Ltd. in Toronto, Ontario is a beautiful golden hue and pours with a loose and spongy white head that tends to leave small islands of lace on the glass. Ginger and botanical extract aromas waft from this blend of beer and ginger ale, along with notes of honey, lemon oil and sharp citric acid.
The taste of Old Tomorrow Honey Ginger Shandy is definitely on the sweet side and carries a solid ginger bite. We aren’t talking Jamaican ginger beer, but it has a defined tang and packs a touch of heat. There is a mild undertone of earthy grains, but ginger takes centre stage here. The beer has a medium body and is fairly viscose, though there’s plenty of fine carbonation to help it from feeling overly sticky as the honey flavour comes through in the finish. A faint lemonade character and hint of florals linger in the aftertaste.
Old Tomorrow Honey Ginger Shandy is packaged in a marigold and dandelion coloured can that features a partial portrait of Sir John A. MacDonald and the brewery’s distinctive bold wordmark. There is a descriptive sentence and list of ingredients on the side, as well as the logo of Muskoka Springs, whose “Muskoka Dry” Pale Ginger Ale is used in this product. You’ll find a canning date stamped on the bottom.
I couldn’t really discern what sort of beer is used as the base of Old Tomorrow Honey Ginger Shandy and frankly it doesn’t really matter. This could have easily been marketed as a ginger beer and is a highly refreshing choice for a hot day, though the sugar content may be to high for some to consider a session with it.
Shandys got overshadowed by the sudden popularity of radler and the great hard root beer craze of 2016, so I applaud Old Tomorrow for trying something a bit different and have been buying Honey Ginger Shandy every hance I get. It’s perfect with sushi rolls and salads.
