Mad & Noisy Hop & Weizen from Creemore Springs Brewery Limited in Creemore, Ontario is cloudy, light chartreuse in colour and pours with a large and creamy white head that settles into a rocky cap and yields some chunky lacing. This hopped up take on german wheat beer has a fairly light and airy smell. Traditional aromas of banana, clove and bubblegum are found, but are muted somewhat by notes of lemongrass and grapefruit pith.
The taste of Mad & Noisy Hop & Weizen is quite crisp, with its slight bitterness front-loaded. There is plenty of grapefruit flavour, along with toasted wheat, light berry notes and a hint of clove in the starkly dry finish and aftertaste. The ale is medium-bodied and has a moderate amount of carbonation, as well and a rather lively mouthfeel.
Mad & Noisy Hop & Weizen comes in a bright yellow can and features an intricately drawn, steampunk-esque ampersand logo surrounded by German and west coast beer imagery. Freshness dating coded in the format of parent company Molson Coors Canada is stamped on the can’s bottom and you’ll find a brief description the beer and brewery offshoot on the side.
I’d like Mad & Noisy Hop & Weizen to be a bit sweeter in general and the dryness may be a bit overplayed, though it certainly made for a refreshing pint on a hot day and is good enough that I’ll likely buy it again. I’ve paired this beer with charcuterie, roasted nuts, strawberries and goat cheese with good results.
In Ontario, Mad & Noisy Hop & Weizen is listed as a seasonal product at the LCBO and surprisingly not available at The Beer Store. The beer is likely also available wherever other Creemore Springs or Granville Island beers are distributed.
