This English-based pale ale from Great Lakes Brewery in Etobicoke, Ontario is light amber in colour with caramel-toned highlights. It pours with a large and creamy off-white head that settles as a rocky cap. Pompous Ass English Pale Ale has a bright, lemony smell with hints of black pepper and light fruit juices that compliment a toasty, toffee-sweetened base.
There is a pleasant sweetness to the taste of Pompous Ass English Pale Ale, which carries notes of caramel, milk chocolate and raisins. A sturdy bitterness precedes a rather dry finish that has notes of black tea and wildflowers. Lemon comes forward in the aftertaste of this medium-bodied, slightly grainy and effervescent ale.
Pompous Ass English Pale Ale comes in a parchment coloured can and features the image of a snooty-looking Englishman Great Lakes brewery has named Fuggled Doublebottom. There is a description of the beer on the back of the can, along with a basic ingredients list and serving suggestions. Freshness dating is stamped on the bottom.
The beer’s wordmark and brewery logo are printed inside copper coloured rings that are a very similar in tone to those used on Great Lakes’ Canuck Pale Ale cans. These two beers are often shelved next to each other at LCBO stores, so be sure to double check what you’re putting in your basket.
Though more in line with the current trend of session-friendly American ales than a traditional English one, Pompous Ass English Pale Ale feels right at home alongside a “meat & mash” type meal, roasted chicken or a pot pie. It’s also a satisfying ale on its own or with some light snacks while watching sports or doing some afternoon gaming.
Its reasonable price point makes Pompous Ass English Pale Ale an easy beer to recommend. You can find it in cans at well over 100 LCBO stores, on tap at select licensees in Ontario and at the brewery’s retail store.
