This low alcohol beer from MADD Virgin Drinks in Toronto, Ontario is an anemic pale yellow colour and pours with a loose, ginger ale-like head that burns off in a flash. MADD Virgin Craft Brewed Lager smells slightly fishy, soapy and metallic, with practically no sort of malt presence to speak of.
The taste of MADD Virgin Craft Brewed Lager is extremely faint with notes of green tea and grassy, floral noble hops accounting for any perception of flavour you might find. The tapioca used does come through in the finish before a subtle metallic aftertaste lingers on the tongue. This lager has the body of a sparkling mineral water along with ample carbonation.
MADD Virgin Craft Brewed Lager was designed by Niagara College Teaching Brewery, who are probably best known for their Butler’s Bitter. The black can displays the MADD logo, a stenciled wordmark and a brief description of the beer. The Nutritional Facts label states that each can contains 100 calories, 14 grams of carbohydrates and no proteins. The can also claims that this is “The world’s first alcohol-free craft brewed lager”, which is just not true at all.
I was excited by the prospect of having a low alcohol beer brewed here in Ontario by what is generally a decent craft brewery. Not only is this product a letdown, it’s simply not enjoyable and makes me feel bloated. You may as well drink water instead of this lager, though maybe you could use it as a carbohydrate replacement after a workout.
I would never offer this beer to a guest at a holiday party or otherwise, I’d rather just buy some O’doul’s or Grolsch Non Alcoholic, which are both better beers at a much better price. MADD Virgin Craft Brewed Lager is sold at Sobeys, Metro and Shoppers Drug Mart stores across Canada and is available exclusively at Walgreens in the USA.
