Black Coal Stout: Fuel the Fire

This American stout from Railway City Brewing Company in St. Thomas, Ontario is opaque black and pours with a spongy, mocha-tinted head that is retained as a thin collar and wispy film. Black Coal Stout has a veritable ton of roasted grain character in its smell, along with deep notes of chocolate, plum, raisin and coffee and hints of nuts and wood.

Black Coal Stout
This Toasty Stout Lives Up to its Name.

The taste of Black Coal Stout is thick with the chocolate and coffee flavours you would expect from a full bodied stout, with a red berry accent and a lemon juice note that is most apparent in the dry finish and coffee-forward aftertaste. The mouthfeel is a bit thin and somewhat oily, which makes this ale drink more like a porter, though it doesn’t detract from the experience at all. Carbonation is minimal, with just enough there to prevent the beer from weighing too heavy on your tongue.

Most of the beers available at the Railway City Brewing Company retail store are packaged in 500 ml bottles. The label on Black Coal Stout is printed primarily in shades of black and grey, with a mysterious character likely representing Zwarte Piet (Black Pete) lurking in the lower right corner and the yellow Ontario Craft Brewers wax seal logo proudly displayed in the top right. Aside from a recommended storage temperature and best before date, there is little information to be found on the label.

A robust aroma and dry, grainy finish encompass the rich flavour profile of Black Coal Stout. This ale pairs quite nicely with aged and smoked cheddars, as well as roast beef, dry sausage and buttery pastries.

This winter seasonal is typically available at the brewery and select Ontario licensees from November to April and you can contact Railway City to arrange home delivery of kegs and cases through your area’s rep.
