This American pale lager from Lake of Bays Brewing Company in Baysville, Ontario is a deep golden colour and pours with a frothy white head that doesn’t leave much lace behind as it settles into a thin collar and film. Top Shelf Classic Lager has a very floral and soapy smell, with warm aromas of honey and lightly toasted malts rounding it out.
The sweet and malty taste of Top Shelf Classic Lager has a notable light caramel tone and fruity, berry-like esters that contribute to a crisp and dry finish. This lager has a medium body and fairly high carbonation level. The mouthfeel has a certain earthiness to it and there is almost no palpable aftertaste, which makes for a clean and refreshing experience.
Top Shelf Classic Lager is produced in association with the NHL Alumni Association and a portion of its proceeds go towards supporting the group’s activities.
The lager is housed in an attractive light blue and silver can that has a simple wordmark printed in white above a pair of crossed hockey sticks and a puck. The NHL Alumni logo is featured on the front and back of the can. The back also has a basic description of the beer and partnership with “Hockey’s Greatest Family”. A list of ingredients and contact information are found on the side, while a best before date is stamped in black near the can’s shoulder.
Top Shelf Classic Lager is a solid American pale lager that is well-suited to the casual, sport-oriented crowd it targets. Seasoned craft beer fans may scoff at this beer’s simplicity, though in my opinion, that simplicity is also its greatest strength.
I have enjoyed Top Shelf Classic Lager most with pizza, tacos and red sauce-based dishes. It would also pair well with sports bar staples like chicken fingers, wings, hamburgers and fries. You can find this beer at over 200 LCBO stores and many licensees throughout Ontario. The Lake of Bays Brewing Company retail store is also open seven days a week.
