Mill Street Vanilla Porter: Open Your Eyes

This flavoured porter from Mill Street Brewery in Toronto, Ontario is a deep, ruby-hued brown with a very frothy, nitro-charged beige head that settles as a persistent cap and leaves large swaths of lace as you drink. Mill Street Vanilla Porter has an appetizing blend of aromas including chocolate, coffee, roasted barley malt, berry and of course vanilla.

This Creamy Porter Pairs with Appetizers, Dinner and Dessert

The taste of Mill Street Vanilla Porter is chocolate-forward with notes of dried dark fruits like plum, raisin and cherry and a subdued vanilla flavour. This ale is full-bodied, rich, grainy and slightly viscose, with very little carbonation aside from the head. There is a moderate bitterness on the tongue that lingers throughout the aftertaste along with a warm, woody tone.

Mill Street Vanilla Porter is packaged in beige cans that use copper and gold printing and have an image of a vanilla flower in the middle of an oval-shaped logo. The back of the can has a description of the beer, a list of ingredients and an instruction to serve the beer cold. I can’t stress enough how important it is to let the beer chill undisturbed for at least 12 hours. Not doing so will likely result in a very sticky mess for you to clean up.

The vanilla flavour in Mill Street Vanilla Porter serves an accent to a well-crafted and sturdy American porter without being a crutch and plays very well of the roasted and chocolaty characteristics of the brew. I’ve found this beer a great match for creamy cheeses, roast beef, chocolate, dates and vanilla ice cream.

Mill Street Vanilla Porter is available on tap and in cans at the brew pubs in both Toronto and Ottawa and the cans are currently listed at over 200 LCBO stores.
