Moroccan Brown Ale: Here’s Looking at You, Fig

Moroccan Brown Ale from Spearhead Brewing Company Limited in Toronto, Ontario is nut brown in colour, with streaks of rust and ruby and a small tan coloured head that leaves small spots of lace and hangs around as a tight collar and cap. This fruit and spice infused American brown ale has a very inviting blend of fruitcake, raisin, hazelnut, roasted coffee and freshwater aromas.

Moroccan Brown Ale
This Fruity Ale is Both Rich and Refreshing

The blend of dark fruits used in the brewing of Moroccan Brown Ale is at the forefront of its taste and the fig, date and raisin flavours are deftly tied together by a touch of cinnamon. A warm and dry chocolaty tone encapsulates the finish, with the dryness persisting throughout the aftertaste along with a shiraz-like red wine flavour. This ale is fairly thin and low in carbonation, but also carries mild oily and grainy characteristics.

The packaging of Moroccan Brown Ale uses contrasting peacock blue and dark brown tones and features the image of a belly dancer. The sleeve contains technical information such as IBU, SRM and OG, a description of the beer and brewery, an extremely detailed list of ingredients and both serving and food pairing suggestions. Freshness dating is stamped on the shoulder of each bottle.

On paper, a rich, strong ale brewed with dark fruits could easily be construed as thick and heavy, however Moroccan Brown Ale is a very refreshing, flavourful and surprisingly light brew and that does quite well in hot weather. I really like snacking on crackers and soft, creamy cheeses while drinking this beer and it will try it both with and in pulled pork and roast beef when I get the chance, there’s an air of cola or root beer about it.

Moroccan Brown Ale is listed at over 100 LCBO locations and is also available on tap at select licensees throughout Ontario.
