This American IPA from Kensington Brewing Company in Toronto, Ontario is a ruby-tinged amber colour with a large tan head that leaves a thick web of lace before settling as a small collar and mossy film. Baldwin FishEYE-PA has a rich smell packed with aromas of berries, tropical fruits like mango and pineapple, notes of caramel and dark grains and a hint of chocolate.
The taste of Baldwin FishEYE-PA is very well-rounded, grainy and decidedly thick with caramel and berry flavours while putting forth a moderate bitterness. This ale is full-bodied, mildly carbonated and very oily feeling. A dry chocolate character in the finish reminds me of a coffee liqueur and dark toffee while the aftertaste takes on a flavour not unlike lemon oil.
It’s hard to miss the can that holds Baldwin FishEYE-PA on the shelf. It features a bright orange goldfish with an enlarged eye that is hooked into white wordmarking and set against a star burst background that uses blue, black and an emerald green colour. A list of ingredients and request to keep the beer refrigerated are found on the back and a best before date is stamped on the can’s shoulder.
Baldwin FishEYE-PA offers a great balance of rich taste, inviting aroma and value. It is distinct amongst its peers, which is something that’s getting tougher to do with every passing month seemingly bringing another American IPA to the Ontario retail market. I enjoyed this ale with dark rye bread, beef stew, old cheddar cheese, grilled chicken and root vegetables.
You can find Baldwin FishEYE-PA at well over 100 LCBO stores and at select licensees throughout Ontario.
