This German wheat ale brewed with sea salt and coriander from Beau’s All Natural Brewing Company in Vankleek Hill, Ontario is a slightly hazy golden yellow with a fair-sized frothy white cap that gets retained as a rocky film and collar. Opa’s Gose has a tart, earthy and even cheesy sort of smell to it that brings to mind wet farmland, with strong notes of wheat, honey and coriander.
The taste of Opa’s Gose is moderately sour and balanced by the peppery dryness of coriander. Light red berry and wheat flavours are accompanied by mild orange and lemon tones. The bitterness of the sea salt really bites on the tongue and the finish becomes quite dry before giving way to honey and wheat flavours in the aftertaste. There is a healthy amount of visible carbonation throughout the glass, creating airiness in this medium-bodied and slightly syrupy ale.
Opa’s Gose has the image of an ornate brown and silver beer stein set against a green sunburst background on its label while the back label has a list of ingredients and packaging date. This beer includes a small canvas bag strung around its neck that contains a small insert describing it and a four gram packet of Beau’s branded sea salt.
The insert suggests adding the sea salt to taste, though I found the Opa’s Gose to be salty enough and drinkers should be aware that the packet contains 67% of your daily recommended sodium intake, which is roughly the same amount as the flavouring pouch in a pack of ramen noodles.
Opa’s Gose, and the style in general are an acquired taste and certainly not for everyone, but more adventurous enthusiasts and those that enjoy sour beers should definitely try it given the chance. It pairs very well with dry meats like summer sausage, landjäger and mild pepperoni. I also enjoyed it with a sharp, earthy cheese and a pretzel bun.
Opa’s Gose was originally released as the seventh entry in Beau’s Wild Oats Series. It became available in select LCBO stores as of July 10, 2013 and is also available at licensees, at the brewery and for home delivery in the Ottawa area through the BYBO service.
