Stereovision from Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery in Barrie, Ontario pours a deep, coppery amber colour with a frothy off-white head that leaves a fair amount of lace and is retained as a thick cap. This hopped-up American pale wheat ale has aromas of crystal malts, toasted wheat, lemon peel, clove, pepper, wildflower, honey and lychee.
The taste of Stereovision is mildly bitter, floral and slightly soapy, with notes of citrus rind, toasted wheat and tea biscuit. The ale has a thin body and mild carbonation, though the cap aids a creamy and slightly oily mouthfeel. The finish is dry and tart, with pepper, earth, metal and wheat coming through in the aftertaste.
The packaging of Stereovision is hard to miss on a shelf. Busy and bright turquoise, purple and yellow art evokes a black light poster designed by someone who was in the middle of an acid trip. A slogan on the neck label reads “See Beer – Differently” and a description of the beer is on the back label. A bottling date and note that reads “Respect the Hop” are stamped on each bottle.
Stereovision has become my favourite of Flying Monkeys’ retail offerings. It’s a very pleasant blend of hoppy ale and toasty, spicy wheat beer tones without going overboard on either side of the spectrum and would definitely a great choice as a patio or barbecue beer. It pairs well with charcutiere, creamy cheeses, spinach-based salads and crackers.
You can find Stereovision listed at select LCBO stores, on tap at licensees throughout southern and eastern Ontario or visit the brewery six days a week (seven during the summer months).
