Old North Mocha Porter: Mocha Chocolata Ya Ya

Old North Mocha Porter from Lake of Bays Brewing Company in Baysville, Ontario is an opaque, steely black with a frothy off-white head that leaves spotty lace and settles as a collar. This coffee-infused American porter has vanilla, coffee, chocolate, dark fruit and musty wood aromas.

Deep, Dark Aromas and Flavours Highlight Old North Mocha Porter

The taste of Old North Mocha Porter has strong roasted grain, coffee, vanilla and chocolate flavours, accented by a berry-like character and finished with a pronounced bitterness. The mouthfeel is quite thin with a faint tingle on the tongue from mild carbonation, while the aftertaste carries notes of coffee and dark fruit.

The Old North Mocha Porter bottle features an understated compass logo printed in gold and a simple white wordmark. It’s simple, but elegant in a way. The back has a description of the beer and indicates that it was produced in partnership with Diesel House Coffee Roasters, Savour Muskoka and The Griffin Gastropub. You will also find a list of ingredients and a sticker with a clearly-marked best before date.

Though the thin mouthfeel is typical of an American porter, the deep, rich flavours of Old North Mocha Porter beg for a somewhat heartier texture to back them up. This winter seasonal is definitely worth a try if you’re looking for a dessert beer or aperitif though and it could also go well with stewed or roasted beef.

You can find Old North Mocha Porter listed at more than 200 LCBO locations, on tap seasonally at licensees throughout Ontario or visit the brewery on Saturdays between 10-5.
