Elora Special Bitter: Sweetens the Deal
Elora Special Bitter from Trafalgar Ales and Meads in Oakville, Ontario pours a rusty amber colour with a cloudy appearance similar to iced tea and little in the way of head. This English-style beer has a deep and rich malt aroma with buttery, caramel-like accents.
I find the taste of Elora Special Bitter fairly complicated. A deep malt taste, creamy mouthfeel and buttery tones are accented by hints of tea and citrus. A dry, hoppy bitterness takes over from there to the finish while leaving some residual caramel tones.
Elora Special Bitter employs the same style of packaging as another beer from Trafalgar Ales and Meads. It certainly won’t win any design awards, but it gets the job done. The label features an image of some hops and proudly sports the Ontario Craft Brewers logo.
Elora Special Bitter is an interesting take on English ale that I‘ve become fond of since finding it at my local LCBO store in a number of formats; my favourite being the 650 mL single bottle. The malty caramel tones provide just enough sweetness to keep the bitterness of the hops from overwhelming you. Trafalgar Ales and Meads welcomes visitors to their brewery seven days a week.
